HAF Partners With Beyond Differences for National Know Your Classmates Day

Washington, DC (October 18, 2018) — How many of us know all of our children’s classmates? As parents, it can be difficult to know how to support our children as they encounter issues of self-identity, cultural stereotypes, and hateful language. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Beyond Differences for National Know Your Classmates Day on October 26, 2018.

“Our partnership with Beyond Differences for Know Your Classmates Day,” says HAF Director of Education Shereen Bhalla, “is a great example of how working together with like minded organizations will help students become more self-aware of their own family's traditions and cultures while simultaneously learning about acceptance, inclusion and respect for their classmates.”

While school institutions are intended to be a safe space, they can become a zone for power imbalances and xenophobic behavior. Bullying in schools can take place in the hallways, bathrooms, waiting for and on school buses, after school activities, online, as well as in classes that require group work or after school engagement. We are encouraging parents to help support their children to embrace differences and contribute to an inclusive classroom environment.

That’s why it's imperative that parents combat bullying by being engaged with their children’s education and proactive in understanding how Hinduism is being taught and discussed in the curriculum. Parents are one of the most important allies in combating bullying, and we encourage you to access our resources on bullying prevention.

Together we can combat religious intolerance in the classrooms and empower our students to be global citizens.
