Hindu American Foundation Mourns Death of Rep. Tom Lantos

WASHINGTON, DC (February 11, 2008) - The Hindu American Foundation expressed profound sadness at the death of Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA), a true friend and supporter of Hindus around the world.  Rep. Lantos was instrumental in setting up the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, and led the charge in assuring America's concern for the discriminated around the world.  He encouraged the foundling HAF in its pursuit of recording human rights abuses against Hindus, and his office was supportive of HAF's initiatives on the Hill.  The only survivor of the Holocaust in the U.S. Congress, Rep. Lantos was a beacon for those who worked on human rights and civil rights issues.

Ishani Chowdhury, Director of Public Policy, HAF, said that Rep. Lantos' "unending struggle for human rights, freedom of conscience, and discrimination is noted in the legacy of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus and the lives of others he touched. Our members were truly honored to have had the opportunity to work with him and hope to see his message live on. We look forward to continue working with the CHRC and others to carry forth his message both within, and beyond the halls of Congress."

The Hindu American Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3), non-partisan organization, promoting the Hindu and American ideals of understanding, tolerance and pluralism.
